The Conrad Algarve in Quinta do Lago hosted the first Students Prize Algarve prize-giving ceremony and auction on Saturday, May 13.

Organised by Sovereign Consultoria Lda based in Lagoa, secondary school students from years 10 to 12 were invited to participate in the competition, which is an initiative of the Sovereign Art Foundation to inspire, encourage and raise funds for disadvantaged children and young adults in the region.

Since February, the 20 finalists' artwork has been exhibited around the Algarve. Blacktower Financial Management donated all the prize-money and the talented winners were:

1st Prize - €750 for the artist and €1,500 for the school
Maria Beatriz de Carvalho Vicente from Nobel International School, Porches, with her picture “Dive of the Being”.

2nd Prize - €500 for the artist and €1,000 for the school
Yalda Abbasi from Escola Secundária João de Deus, Faro, with her painting “Cubism Christmas in Faro”.

3rd Prize - voted by the public - €300 for the artist and €500 for the school
Mariana dos Santos Teixeira from Escola Secundária Dr Francisco Fernandes Lopes, Olhão with her picture “Confusion”.

The auctioneer Peter Massey from the Phileas Fogg Theatre Company did a wonderful job of encouraging the bidding from a novice auction audience and €2,005 euros was raised which was divided between the artists themselves and APEXA, an association that supports people with special needs in the Algarve, the local charity chosen to benefit from the 2017 Prize.

Photographer Dave Sheldrake offered his services to capture the day and everyone is looking forward to the Students Prize Algarve 2018 to be launched in September.

The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF), a non-profit organisation and registered charity which has so far raised over US$5 million for artists and charities worldwide, was established in 2003 to recognise the growing wealth of contemporary art talent in Asia, through its Sovereign Art Prizes, and bring the proven benefits of expressive arts to underprivileged children.

The Students Prize was established in 2012 and contemporary and school art prizes are run around the world.
