Olhanense know that every game is a ‘cup final’ as they battle to secure second place in the Campeonato de Portugal Division E.

The short trip to Loulé to play Louletano saw the visitors lose their centre-back Ivo Nicholas, due to injury in the pre-match warm-up, with Pedro Dias taking his place.

Both sides opened nervously on a playing surface that left much to be desired and was not conducive to playing open attacking football. Long balls and punts upfield were more the order of the day, with Louletano appearing to be happy to settle for a point.

Ten minutes after the interval, Olhanense introduced centre-forward Zé Turbo in place of Ruben Fidalgo.

The 19-year-old, on loan from Italian club Inter Milan, looked useful and caused the home side to drop deeper in defence. With 15 minutes remaining, a moment of pure magic settled the game. André Dias skipped down the left-wing and sent over a waist high cross.

Leleco, hovering on the penalty spot, pivoted and sent a horizontal volley flying past the bemused Louletano keeper Bruno Lúcio. This was a goal that would have graced any top-flight game and was reminiscent of Cristiano Ronaldo at his best!

Olhanense comfortably saw out the rest of the game and leapfrogged CD Pinhalnovense, who drew 1-1 at Farense, into third place and are now just two points behind Casa Pia (Lisbon) who drew 0-0 with Castrense.

Olhanense’s next opponents
Lusitano VRSA travel along the coast to play Olhanense on Sunday at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão - kick-off 3pm. The visitors, currently just one point off bottom place, will be hoping to avenge the 3-2 defeat they suffered in a bad-tempered game against Olhanense in Vila Real de Santo António last September.
