A new initiative to raise environmental awareness among residents and holidaymakers has been launched by the Algarve tourism board (RTA).

The goal is to encourage people to be respectful of the Algarve’s natural treasures.

“We want this campaign to inspire a change of attitude and lead to an improvement in our community’s behaviour. We want to preserve the natural beauty of the Algarve,” said Algarve tourism boss Desidério Silva.

The initiative tackles themes like air pollution, keeping beaches clean and avoiding risky behaviour in forest areas, particularly in the summertime when the risk of wildfires increases drastically.

The campaign is being promoted mostly online “because not only is that the best way to reach more people but it is also more ecological”.

It will also be promoted on billboards, via radio stations and newspapers and on mobile apps.
