Not content to exert their energies at the regular Thursday morning Walking Football session at the José Arcanjo Stadium, Olhão, the players then proceeded to join friends and families at the inaugural Mike Wreford WF Beach Festival.

Mike, a founding member of the group, tragically passed away earlier this year and some 80 guests invaded Armona Island to enjoy an afternoon “Festival of Sport” in his honour.

Beach soccer, volleyball, rounders and yoga provided much merriment before the assembled mass enjoyed a meal provided by the Camaleão Beach Bar, which did sterling work in spite of a power cut!

Mike Wreford’s brother-in-law Graham Keepence and son Toby made a special trip from the UK to hand over the Mike Wreford ‘New Player of the Year Award’ which will be presented at the group’s Presentation Dinner in December.

Mike’s sons Pat and Joel sent a message.

“Honestly, it's such a great idea and a fitting tribute to Dad. We are genuinely grateful to you all out there for keeping his memory going. We are aware of what a legend he was but for us, it’s incredibly touching to see how well liked he was and how much fun you guys are going to have in his honour.

“Lounging around on the beach was Dad in his element (or his office as he liked to call it) so there’s literally no better way to celebrate him.”
